How Do I Express (###) in (###language)?

As far as I’m concerned, crappy resources aside and teachers aside, the most frustrating obstacle in language learning  – the Swamp of Sorrow of language learning is not having a non-native speaker who is better than you (or a native speaker who is super fluent in your language) who can answer your silly (but often important) questions.

So the purpose of this page is to ask questions.  If we get a lot, I’ll make a faq or something so you can search for answers first.  **Note – if you are studying some other language, go ahead and ask about that one too if you want.  I obviously can’t know all or even that many of the answers, but I’ll make an effort to help find them if I can.

Guidelines:

  1. Don’t guess.  If you don’t know how to say it, write it down and ask later.  You will guess wrong most of the time and likely pick up bad (unnatural) habits.  **If you haven’t heard/read it yet you probably aren’t ready to say it yet.
  2. Do explain as much context as possible.  Don’t just give a word/phrase/sentence and expect a translation.  You need to explain the situation you were in with as much context as possible for anyone to give you a good answer.
  3. Do focus on things you actually encounter, not just every thing that pops into your head that you might want to say.  The stuff you encounter is easiest to remember and should be mastered first.

Hey what is that phrase the beer girls always ask me when I’m drinking and they want to know if I want more or not. I get what they are asking, but I’m not sure what they are saying.

I think the most common thing I hear is:

เอา เบียร เพิ่ม มั้ย – Do you want more beer?

    Other similar possibilities:

เอา อะไร เพิ่ม มั้ย Do you want anything else?

จะ สั่ง อะไร เพิ่ม/อีก มั้ย Do you want to order anything else/more?

You can answer that in a bunch of ways. Here’s a few short ones to get you started.

    I’m done – ไม่ เอา แล้ว
    I/We’ll take one more pro(motion). – เอา อีก โปร หนึ่ง
I/We’ll take one more beer. เอา อีก ขวด (นึง)
No more right now. ยัง ไม่ เอา

    Hi there,

I am living in Bangkok and have been here for about 5 years although only started learning Thai ‘officially’ a couple of months ago. I am very interested in your teaching methods (via Skype). So I guess my questions are mainly related to your cost and availability for lessons.
