SRS Tweakage

While I was in Korea I started doing something a little bit different and it seems to be working really well.  First, I take a piece of audio.  Usually from a short conversation from a podcast or whatever.  Than I put the whole clip on the front of an Anki card.  I put the text on the other side.  No English, so it’s stuff I kinda know, but might not catch because I’ve never really heard anybody say it before.  Then I break the clip into a bunch of pieces.  Usually an entire sentence, sometimes more if the context calls for it.  I make cards for all the individual pieces.  Then I take all the little audio clips and I throw them on my ipod and I loop it.  If a sentence pops up that I don’t really understand, I make a note to pay more attention to the card next time I see it.  This almost never happens though.  I kinda get the gist of it when making all the audio clips and typing up the conversation.  Then the repeated audio makes sure I can’t forget it.  After the audio has been floating around in my head for a while – the sentences just pop up in my head and I can say them.

Barcamp 3.5 in Bangkok

May 15, 2010 1 comment

I’m going to be in Bangkok this weekend for Barcamp 3.5 and if anyone is interested I am willing to do a free lesson or 2 during the conference.

You can register here.

Barcamp was cancelled due to escalating violence. I already bought my flights so I’ll still be heading to Bangkok for a couple days. Relaxing holiday?

In the Works

I’ve had to put the video project on hold temporarily as I’ve just been too busy to film.  I’m taking care of a few loose ends so I can finally graduate.  Any day now.

I am currently teaching Thai part-time (to farangs of course) at my university and it has been an interesting experience.  They were fresh off the boat and I only get them once a week so it has been challenging to design an alphabet boot camp for them.   This has led me to create a number of resources that are useful for beginners or anyone trying to learn the sound system and/or wants to be able to read properly.  I have an idea for an experiment and could use a few subjects.    People who can’t read well or at all are preferred.  If you can kinda read, but aren’t solid on the sounds, it will probably still be useful for you.  It would require a bit of time and effort on your part, but not too much.  I’m not sure how many people I can take on, but probably 2 or 3 should be fine.  Anybody interested?  Its nice to be literate.

While I am working on a couple other projects at the moment, being done with school will give me a window of time to work on a something over the next few months.  I think its almost time to move away from the blog format and into something different.  I’m open to suggestions/requests.  Let me know if there is something in particular that you’d like to see.

In the meantime, I have more transcripts in progress and there are probably another 50 videos to dig through some of which may be good enough to post so expect a bit more in the not to distant future.

If any of this stuff is of interest, contact me at  learnthaifromawhiteguy AT gmail dOt com

Also, I’m heading to Bangkok in a week or so and if anybody wants a lesson and/or to meet up, let me know soon.

Internet Problems

September 1, 2009 Leave a comment

So, I haven’t been able to upload from my room for over a week.  I tried an internet shop and problems there as well, though I did manage to get very short clips up.  I tried to upload from the spot I usually film at the other day and had no luck.  I’m not really sure what to do.  I have about 30 vids, but for whatever reason the internet in Thailand has been pretty crazy lately.  More so than usual.  Sometimes when I’m uploading small files to gmail it fails and I need to retry 3 or 4 times before it gets uploaded.  Is anyone else experiencing stuff like this?  I use maxnet.

Anyways, as you may have noticed, I’m focuing on transcripts in the meantime.  More to come in a day or 2.

Thai Censorship

Something seems to be going on at the moment.  I haven’t been able to upload properly since Tuesday.  I managed to get 2 vids up somehow, but I have loads more I’d like to get up.  I’ve tried other video hosting sites and have encountered similar results.  Occasionally, when I type in a web address I receive the “This site has been closed by the Royal Thai Police…” This happened with both gmail and youtube.

I’m still going to be filming videos, but if nothing new goes up for a bit, at least you know why.
